RMA Hot Cancellation: Atlanta Veterans Day Parade

Dear Riverside Community,

 

I am saddened to report that we are cancelling our Corps of Cadets participation in the 2023 Georgia Veterans Day Parade scheduled for this Saturday, November 11. There was a significant change in the parade route/venue that had already caused very significant logistical challenges for the Academy and for your attendance as well. Further, we have experienced a recent increase in seasonal colds on campus which, joined with a weather forecast for wind, rain, and cold temperatures, could increase health risks for the entire Corps. Given the new location, our cadets would be required to stand outside in wet/cold conditions in a pre-parade assembly area for a considerable time period, followed by a long march through the city, then a 25-minute bus ride to a sign-out location ten miles away from the parade --- all the while in soaked uniforms and boots. Further, rain does not bode well with our musical instruments and issued weapons.

 

I wanted to give you at least a day’s time to adjust your plans.

 

While this is indeed a disappointment for our award-winning marching unit, my first priority is to ensure the welfare of our young men, hence my decision to cancel. On the bright side, this will allow those families scheduled to sign-out after the parade, to now do so a day earlier. The precise changes and Orah sign-out procedures follow at the tail of this message.

 

As always, I appreciate your patience and support as we alter our plans for this year’s parade.

The Corps of Cadets will be engaged in Company and Battalion level training as part of their school day.

Day cadets should report/arrive NO LATER THAN 8:30 am.  There will be NO gating/guard path this weekend.

You must re-submit a new Leave Pass in Orah. (All previous Veterans Day Leave Passes in Orah have been cancelled.)

ROCs who are cresting at Pass In Review on this date (November 10) may sign out beginning at 1:00 pm from McLendon Quad.

 

Signs Outs for the remainder of the Corps of Cadets will begin at 4:00 pm in the Welcome Center at West Portal.

*For this special option, please complete the Orah Leave Pass “Special Cadet Pick Up on Saturday 11^th November” before 4:00 pm Friday, November 10 so that we may plan accordingly.

 

A shuttle bus will be available to transport cadets to the original Veterans Day Parade Parents Pick Up Point at Regal Hollywood @ North I-85 (3265 Northeast Expressway Access, Chamblee, GA). The shuttle bus will arrive at 10:00 am and wait for one hour. The bus will depart promptly at 11:00 am and return to RMA.

 

All other sign-outs follow the usual procedure and location.

 

Regular weekend activities will be provided by the Student Affairs team. There will also be opportunity for remaining cadets to get off campus to do shopping. An Event Pass will be set up by Student Affairs for this trip as well.
