ROC CRESTING
Boys arrive at Riverside Military Academy as Recruits on Campus, or “ROCs,” and must earn the title of Cadet.  The transformation from a ROC to a Cadet requires these young men to demonstrate proficiency in several areas of Cadet Life.  They have learned an incredible amount of Riverside history, military structure, and Drill & Ceremonies. They have endured tough physical training, as well as a hike up historic Currahee Mountain, and all of this for a purpose: to develop a sound mind in a sound body. They have done these things in the framework of a highly demanding daily schedule—a schedule already dominated by rigorous academic coursework and athletic practices and competitions. These young men get up before the sunrise and only rest well after the sun has gone down.
Becoming a Cadet means something different to every young man, but there are common threads that relate to all: doing difficult things that they have never done before, demonstrating the willpower and discipline to adhere to a code of conduct, to follow orders and instructions despite discomfort and inconvenience, and to stand a little taller, a little prouder, knowing that their loved ones can see a difference between the young man he was and the young man he has become at the end of his ROC Cycle.
Our Scout company has recently been given an assignment to give their perspective on the ROC Cycle and had some interesting things to say about it.

“I think the ROC cycle is important to me as it teaches me discipline and how to be respectful to all people.”
“It teaches you great manners and most of all, it teaches you to respect your higher ups.”
“I think the ROC cycle is very important for many reasons. To start, it teaches you proper cadet life.”
We appreciate the effort each recruit put into his assignment and are proud of the growth they have experienced in becoming cadets.
